    The customer was a Singapore based company specializing in luxury products development and global sales, their products featured the style of high quality, exquisiteness, pleasure and durability. To ensure the top grade, lightweight and durability of this metal Pen, customer changed the material from original aluminum or stainless steel to titanium alloy TI6AL4V for its material properties of high strength-to-density ratio and excellent corrosion resistance. In addition, an efficient solution was provided timely by us to solve the unexpected assembling problem happened before the low volume production.



2. Project Challenges:

(1). The first challenge was the heat dissipation of titanium milling since its fairly low material thermal conductivity, the workpiece might burn and/or chip adhesion to cutting tool occurred during titanium milling if unreasonable heat dissipation.

(2). Titanium alloy had less stiffness than many other metals such as aluminum and steel, which resulted in the big risk of workpiece distortion and jarring during its milling that would damage the cutting tool and milled surface quality.

(3). The seamless alignment between the Pen Cap and Housing was the key challenge for this project. To achieve the high efficient alignment, the customer took our advice of slightly revising the inner mechanical design.

First of all, an aluminum prototype was CNC milled to verify both the Pen's appearance design and also the seamless alignment between the Pen Cap and Housing, the aluminum prototyping result confirmed the effectiveness of the seamless alignment, then the titanium prototyping was followed before starting the low volume manufacturing.

The above mentioned three challenges occurred during the titanium prototyping by CNC machining, especially the third one of seamless alignment that was a difficulty to get over though the aluminum prototyping result was fine. At that time, one of our mechanical engineers advised to slightly revise the inner mechanical design. After customer's evaluation and approval of the minor revision advice from us, a new titanium prototype was milled by using the revised 3D file, and the new titanium prototype delivered an excellent seamless alignment between the Cap and Housing, then customer started the low volume manufacturing.

The challenges occurred and solved during the titanium prototype manufacturing acted as a reliable instruction for the low volume manufacturing of this titanium pen, the whole production process was smooth and efficient. The surface finishing PVD coating for the parts. PVD coating provided not only the color decoration also the stronger hardness and abrasion resistance for the coated surface, so this finishing helped get more durability for this pen.

Finished products for delivery. Before packaging the finished products for shipping, each product was gone through the strict quality inspection in size, shape, appearance, fitting and surface finishing, the substandard product was sorted out for repair or remake, and the quality inspection sheet was provided as per request. Titanium alloy was widely used in aerospace, military, healthcare, defence and many other applications for its two most useful material properties of high strength-to-density ratio and excellent corrosion resistance. Being different to milling many other metals, the reasonable heat dissipation and stable milling system had to be considered very well for achieving the effective titanium machining.
