5 Axis CNC Machining was a high precision manufacturing process that the cutting tool moved across X, Y and Z linear axes as well as simultaneously rotated around A and B axes to approach the workpiece, it could mill up to 5 sides (usually 6 sides a part) except the supporting side in a single setup, which was proper to mill the parts of complex design and high tolerance.
Why 5 Axis CNC Machining For Us:

To save time and cost of milling the part with complex 3D geometry by 3 axis CNC, the part was usually split into several simple pieces to be milled respectively, then glued or welded the milled pieces together to form the part, which resulted in the possibility of unstable dimensions, weak strength and low precision, so 3 axis CNC was incompetent for milling the part with those requirements, then 5 axis CNC was a reliable choice.

5 axis CNC machining   The Advantages of 5 Axis CNC Machining:

Multi-sided machining in one setup. For 3 axis CNC, the workpiece was rotated manually to be milled side by side, which meant one setup for milling one side. 5 axis CNC could mill up to 5 sides in one setup as the workpiece simultaneously rotated around A and B axes that resulted in milling 4 more sides instead of only one side by 3 axis CNC.
5 axis CNC shopLess fixtures assistance. For 3 axis CNC, fixtures were usually necessary to assist milling, usually one fixture one feature. For 5 axis CNC, it could eliminate the assistant fixtures used by 3 axis CNC as more as possible.

It was feasible to mill this titanium Pen by 3 axis CNC as its aluminum prototype made (showed on another Case Study of CNC Titanium Milled Parts), while 5 axis CNC delivered below benefits:

1. Tighter tolerance and smoother milled surface since the better milling efficiency, much less manual setups and assistant fixtures.

2. Saving surface finishing time and cost. The smoother milled surface greatly reduced the hand sanding time as well as the finishing cost.

3. Shorter lead time as the faster CNC material removal, shorter surface finishing time, less manual setups and fixtures used.
